Swifty has created an mini-exhibition of his personal alphabet, The A-Z of Swifty - from Action Man to Zebedee, depicting different memories inspired by each letter. These are beautifully created pieces of art, each with an emotive story of times gone by.
The Pop Shop, which is being brought to Birmingham by Sauce Gallery and Punch Records, features Swifty’s Newsagents installation. This life size shop front was partly inspired by Peter Blake’s ‘Toy Shop’ and the artist’s fond memories of a local village newsagent in Lancashire.
As one of the true British graphic originators of our time, Swifty has been hugely influential in music and youth culture since he started out in the late 1980’s. Fresh from art school he landed a job at legendary THE FACE magazine. Over the past fifteen years he has worked for ARENA, been the art director of Straight No Chaser magazine and founded the company Swifty Typographix.
Between 1990’s, his output reached a whole new level producing a diverse volume of distinctive record sleeves for seminal record labels such as Mo’ Wax, Talkin’ Loud and Source 360 including the labels iconic brand logos.
Since then, he has ventured into the realm of art which merges his now-iconic graphic styles with mixed media executions. For the first time ever, he will be exhibiting his work at Sauce Gallery in Birmingham. (10th Dec - Mid Feb 2010)
As an additional special touch to his shows, Swifty will interpret the graphics of local iconic brands in limited edition prints which can be purchased exclusively at Sauce Gallery.
This is definitely an event for all lovers of old and new school alike!
The Pop Shop is open to the public at the Sauce Gallery, 5 The Custard Factory, Gibb Street, Digbeth from 11th Dec to Mid Feb 2010.
